Hey, which one of you has joined us? I'll go ahead and guess Doug. One of my emails was read on the Puck Podcast in the past! Welcome!

AND, of course they'll honor the deal. It would be a PR disaster to let a South Buffalo kid walk away over a couple hundred thou at this point in his young career.

Wait why? To be nice? They offered 700K because it was mandatory. This is a business, they aren't going to go out and give him a big raise if they don't have to. If they ruling goes in favor of Kennedy I'm sure the Sabres will agree and pay him his money. If not the Sabres win and pay 700K.

Kennedy should be thankful the Sabres gave him a full season last year. He could have easily been kept in the AHL another season and made $62,500 instead of the $635,000 plus any bonuses he may have received.

What? Kennedy should be thankful? The Sabres put him on the Sabres because HE EARNED THE JOB! Yes, the could have kept him in the AHL, but the Sabres needed his skill and work ethic in the NHL. Had he not earned the job he would have been in the AHL like Gerbe. Under your logic, Myers should be thankful that the sabres let him play in the big leagues instead of returning him to juniors and paying him nothing.

the Sabres had to make the qualifying offer to retain their rights to Kennedy, but Kennedy earned a raise above the standard qualifying offer. They agreed to pay Kaleta 900K a year for 10 goals and 6-8 minutes per game. What is a 2/3rd line player worth that scored 10 goals and added 16 assists, can play on all special teams and plays 12+
minutes a game? Remember this is the same team that signed Paetsch for 3yr following a rookie campaign as a 7th D for $1 mill per season. My point is there is penny wise and pound foolish, but a apprently the Sabres thought the risk was worth it to go to arbitration to try to save 300K.

Actually they have no choice. They have to accept the award.

@BNHarrington

Looks like #Sabres don't have walk-away rights because Kennedy's award is less than $1,042,173 as per 12.10 (a) of CBA

That number has also since been raised. edit: $1,611,180

I'm pretty sure Myers is very thankful that the Sabres brought him up instead of sending him back to Juniors. Of course he earned it but it doesn't mean Buffalo had to do it. Why the frack wouldn't he be thankful?

I'm confused and it's definitely not the first time. Do the Sabres have the right of refusal and let him be a FA or not? What do you mean with your quote trump?

This is a steal imo. Kennedy is only approaching what he can and will do in this league. He is the type of player any coach and organization would want on their team - he doesn't say boo, puts his head down works his butt off and does whatever the coach tells him (for better or worse). Lock him up for 2 to 3 years at a lower salary and when he blossoms, you have yourself a bargain!

It means that because Kennedy's award is below that magic number, the Sabres have to pay him that much. They have no choice, they cannot walk away from the contract. Therefore Tim Kennedy is officially a Buffalo Sabres with a 1 year contract.

Quote

Buffalo Sabres forward Tim Kennedy was awarded a one year, $1 million contract today by an arbitrator. Kennedy’s hearing took place July 27 in Toronto. As per the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, the club is not eligible to walk away from an award lower than $1,611,180.

So, is that good or bad? I mean, its 1 mil for 1 year. That's not awful. He just, you know, has to actually earn it or something.

He's still an RFA after this season, too, right?

I'm not sure, I think he would be a UFA as doesn't age factor in on this too?

He'll be an RFA next year. For UFA it's 27 years old (or 7 years of NHL service but he'll hit 27 before that).

It's actually good in two ways - One, $1M is a reasonable contract price for a year. Two, I believe that Kennedy only gets to file for arbitration once, so the one key ability an RFA has for negotiations will not be available to him next off-season.
