Is Kennedy REALLY under the microscope now?

He said in the link below he wants to earn his paycheck. Does anyone disagree that there's genuine pressure on him now? What's realistic for him? Darcy wants more points. I think he projects to a 20-goal, 45/50-point guy someday.

Not really. Lets be honest, Kennedy at $1 million isn't that big a deal. Actually, in today's NHL, $1 million for a top 9 forward is a steal, especially one who could see top line minutes (he played well with Roy and Vanek last season). I don't think Kennedy needs to blow up to earn this contract.

There isn't any more pressure than normal on the guy to perform the way he's expected to. All these guys getting their millions, or in Kennedy's case, his million, are under pressure to perform all the time. And it mostly comes from themselves and their teammates, who only want to win. He's no further under a microscope than he was last season. What has changed is that he knows what to expect and he must consistently rise above those expectations, or at least meet them. Anything less and he may not be able to get much more than the mandatory raise next season. But if he plays well and produces now that he knows what he's doing here, he'll get more money next season.
That's the real motivation.

He's a second year NHL player this year, and entered the league as a 6th round draft pick. He's not facing any more challenges than he's had to overcome already. In 2008-09 he led all rookies in scoring in the AHL, All Rookie Team player. Then in 2009-10 he made the big club and fit in quite well, managing to stay out of Lindy's doghouse for the most part, which is no easy task for a young player. $1 mil is a fair amount for both sides, and like someone else mentioned, I'm sure he wants to stay here long term and will be playing for that extension.

As the roster seems to be getting filled in, is Kennedy under anymore of a microscope than Ennis, Gerbe, Butler and Sekera. Without the signing of a big free agent it appears we as fans will be watching those players just as much as Kennedy. Unless something surprising happens over the next couple of months before training camp these are the young guys that have to step in and be ready to play.
